Artificial Intelligence, we depict this to be futuristic, when we hear this word the first thing we see in our mind is a human like robot. Artificial Intelligence also known as A.I. is the
theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages according to Google.
The first person that probably thought about a machine that can perform and will have a useful reasoning was Ramon Llull during the Middle Ages (c. 1300 CE).
2015 was the landmark year for artificial intelligence with the increased usage of software projects within Google, Microsoft, and Facebook that utilizes AI with fewer errors.
AI has been present in movies too like Jarvis (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System) by Tony Stark of Iron Man, the cute robots in the Wall-E movie, the starship Avalon its robots and the bartender, and so many other movies that tell about robot or AI all of them clearly stating that they are better than us, trusted, concise, and so many other good attributes that will help human race in the future.
Meanwhile, in the real world, we have now digital assistants like Siri, Google Assistant or Google Now, Cortana and so many other mobile assistants in the app store either free or premium.
It’s obvious that this science dream is now turning into reality as we hit this century and we are seeing and appreciating its value to us as well. The businesses are looking into it too. Many businesses are supporting AI as their new wave of labors which makes us human being in danger, the businessmen would prefer less costly yet efficient and can handle jobs in mass.
More than half will be displaced from their job due to Artificial Intelligence
As AI comes it is expected that there will be a displacement in the workforce as it will replace human workers, according to McKinsey and Company 78% of predictable physical work will be impacted, next is Data processing with 69% and Data collection for 64%.
According to Futurism, industries that will be affected first are those in Sales, Customer Service, Transportation, Shipping and Logistics, Healthcare and Legal Paraprofessionals.
In fact in Customer Service industry, we are now seeing bots embedded in apps like Facebook messenger, website’s plug-ins or widgets that will handle first level customer concerns. Three years from now (2020), it is predicted that 85% of customer service transactions will be handled by AI and self-driving cars will be on the road according to Wiredelta.
In the figure above, it shows the population ratio and the jobs, assuming that jobs are equal to the number of population, however because of automation or AI more than 50% of it are being worked by artificial intelligence so there are only few jobs that human can work on. More than 50% of the population will have no work and then competition will be very tough.
This is just a transition
As of now, AI is still a baby and it still needs human to teach it but as technology and innovation thrive artificial intelligence will grow and become more intelligent than human beings. So how do we make sure that we are still valuable in the future? If your current job and skills you have now belongs to those they called “Predictable physical work” then you better start acquiring the skills that are unpredictable, needs interactions, expertise, creativity, and management.
This may sound like a zombie apocalypse on our career but a study by economists at the consultancy Deloitte says the otherwise. Automation will create a new demand and new jobs. They cited that in some sectors like in medicine, education, and professional service the technology raised the productivity and employment. In the 1871 census record from 9,832 accountants in England and Wales, it rose to 215,678 after 140 years.
There is nothing permanent except change
Every change will always disrupt the routinary, We are now on the verge of AI era and we need to make sure that we are prepared for it. Good luck to all of us!
